‘Social Listening’: Unilever Aims to Harness Vaseline’s Viral TikTok Trend.
As a product discovered over 150 years ago in the oil fields of Pennsylvania, the humble pot of Vaseline might not appear as an obvious target for digital platform algorithms.
Nonetheless, its ascent as a viral TikTok topic has thrust it into the lead of an marketing transformation, in which large companies are investing heavily in content creators and devoting less capital to advertising goods in legacy broadcasters.
A Journey from Drilling to Digital
The petroleum jelly was first manufactured in the 1870s by chemist Robert Cheeseborough, who observed drillers applying to their skin with a residue from oil extraction. Currently, a wave of user-generated videos have recorded its extensive utilization in “everyday tips”.
Hailed as a solution for polishing footwear or extending perfume longevity, as well as a fix for noisy doorways. It has even been deployed to prevent the annoyance of chip seasoning clinging to fingers.
Leveraging the Buzz
Spotting its digital renaissance, executives at the multinational boosted the tips by having their research teams evaluate the claims and sharing the findings with influencers.
Claims that Vaseline reduced the sting of chili on the mouth were given the thumbs up. This was also the case for ideas it could prolong perfume and revive leather bags. Proposals that it might brighten smiles or lengthen eyelashes were debunked.
The ‘Digital Ear’ Approach
Billboards and TV ads would once have formed the bulk of its promotional efforts. However, this online trend has persuaded leaders to turbocharge spending on content creators.
This monitoring of online platforms to shape commercial tactics has been termed “social listening”. Fernando Fernández, newly named, has indicated the goal is to spend 50% of its massive marketing spend on digital creator content.
Shifting to Modern Engagement
The company's social media lead, who is leading the online push, said the company was merely adjusting to novel methods of connecting with customers. She said participating on platforms “without dampening the fun” was essential.
“What is the key to genuine brand integration? This has perpetually been our aim as brands, dating to when neighbors chatted over fences and discussing household products.
“There’s this moving away from a one-to-many model, where we would just transmit messages … Now it’s many conversations, various groups. The evolution of platform algorithms means that these audiences appear specific, however, they are large.
“Having your brand advocated by consumers, mentioned by individuals, this builds credibility and connection. Content makers are key. We’re really scaling this advocacy model.”
A Fundamental Consumption Turn
The strategy reflects dramatic transformations occurring in how media is consumed, with the youth demographic devoting greater hours to apps like TikTok and Instagram than television, magazines or radio.
The transition is visible in drops in TV and print advertising. In the UK, ad revenues for primary networks have dropped substantially in inflation-adjusted terms since 2019.
The Creator Economy Boom
Additionally, it points to a media convergence as brands effectively act as media producers, linking up with hundreds of content creators to enhance their items.
An industry expert from a leading agency said: “Naturally, an exodus of attention from conventional channels and they are dedicating far more hours to Instagram, TikTok and YouTube than they are viewing scheduled television or reading physical magazines.
“Numerous corporations inform us people trust recommendations from the individuals they follow over traditional advertisements. It's an ongoing shift.”
He noted companies can reduce costs by focusing on influencers over large-scale legacy ad buys, which also allows them to tweak their content more easily to gauge performance.
This strategy is expanding. Marketing investment on the creator economy is increasing four times faster than total media spending. Stateside, it has more than doubled since 2021 and is projected to reach multi-billion dollar sums in 2025.
The Enduring Power of Broadcast
Even with this transformation, industry figures said they believed broadcast ads retained significant importance to play, as broadcasters retained the power to shape the national conversation.
She added: “A top-tier ROI marketing event is still the Super Bowl. It’s not about those broadcasters saying: ‘Oh, we’re not relevant any more.’ It’s about who’s capturing attention … I believe there is absolutely a role for them.”
