Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also carried high-profile passengers.

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the experience, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
